Remembering the visionary leader on his birth anniversary
On the birth anniversary of Vasantrao Phulsing Naik, we pay tribute to the legendary leader who transformed Maharashtra’s agricultural landscape and became the true pioneer of the Green Revolution in the state.
👨🌾 Who Was Vasantrao Naik?

Born on July 1, 1913, in Yavatmal district, Vasantrao Naik served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1963 to 1975—the longest-serving CM in the state’s history. But more importantly, he was a farmer’s leader, a reformer, and a visionary who understood that empowering rural India was the key to progress.
🌱 His Role in the Green Revolution
While the Green Revolution began in India during the 1960s, it was Vasantrao Naik’s leadership that made it a success in Maharashtra. Here’s how he made it happen:

✅ Introduced modern farming techniques
✅ Promoted the use of high-yielding seed varieties
✅ Encouraged irrigation projects and water conservation
✅ Established Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) to protect farmers from exploitation
✅ Supported cooperative movements and agriculture-based industries
His government empowered the rural economy and brought prosperity to Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Western Maharashtra, which were once considered drought-prone regions.
🌾 Legacy of a Visionary
Thanks to his efforts, farmers began producing more, rural employment increased, and food security improved in Maharashtra. Vasantrao Naik believed that “Annadata (farmer) is the backbone of our nation,” and he worked tirelessly to uplift them.
In his honor, the Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavlamban Mission (VNSSM) continues to work toward sustainable farming and farmer empowerment in Maharashtra today.
